Renovate or Relocate

Project Overview

Deciding whether to renovate or relocate was top of mind for this McKenzie Lake residing family. They were concerned about eclipsing their homes value by investing too much into their home renovation. At the same time, they had a significant list of requirements for a renovation and the desire to stay in their existing home for at least another 8-10 years. Through a feasibility discussion with Pinnacle, they discovered they would be able to achieve what they wished, within a reasonably acceptable budget range.

Project criteria

This family’s main criteria was the desire to update the existing home from a dated 80’s oak package to a mid-century modern design. Working with Pinnacle’s design team, they were able to achieve a solution to create an open kitchen and dining area, while not having to compromise the size of the island they wanted. This was achieved by installing a bearing beam and creating an open set of barn doors, which now connects the dining room to the kitchen.

Pinnacle’s custom cabinetry division allowed this client to create a fully customized island depth so that it worked within the footprint of the existing kitchen. Existing oak cabinetry was removed on one entire wall to create a feeling of spaciousness in sync with a mid-century modern feel, which in turn allowed for an exquisite set of double barn doors. Fully custom cabinets were crafted to perfectly fit the proposed cabinet area and maximize every available space. As well, to accommodate the budget requirements, the kitchen sink and window location were both kept intact, alleviating the need for any exterior repairs or changes or plumbing relocates.

During the Design Discovery process, it was also determined that the dropped family room floor design adjacent to the kitchen created limitations for furniture placement. Subsequently, the floor was raised, allowing it to be flush with the kitchen and dining room area for complete flexibility of furniture placement; the result created great flexibility and a much better flow from kitchen to Great Room.

In addition, the existing brick wood-burning fireplace was replaced with a linear burning gas fireplace and a recessed TV positioned directly above the fireplace. The family room transformation was completed with the two custom built-in cabinets flanking the fireplace; the resulting feel of this space beckons friends and family to completely enjoy this welcoming Great Room.

The main floor makeover also included freshening up the powder room, laundry area and staircase railing and the removal of an unsightly bulk head in the formal dining room and family room. As a result; the first glimpse and sight lines from the front door to the staircase, as well as the newly positioned dining room with the elegant barn doors beyond, now all blends beautifully with the balance of the main floor transformation.

The final result is an exquisite home that compliments the family’s existing needs, as well as their keen desire for a complete design transition they will enjoy for years to come; at the same time, the entire renovation creates a great first impression, along with an impactful design that will only enhance future saleability.
