RenoGreen TIP of the Month!

What is the RenoGreen Tip?
At the beginning of every month, we will be highlighting an environmentally conscious tip. Pinnacle Renovations is a progressively minded company, and we believe we have a responsibility to provide our customers information towards making eco-friendly decisions.

January's RenoGreen Tip:
“Did you know you can slash your home energy bill by as much as 30% by replacing your furnace with a high-efficiency model?”
One of the major points of discussion in environmental news has to do with Energy savings and reducing the expenditure and costs involved. In our Alberta climate, we understand that keeping our homes warm in the cold winter months is a necessary cost. If you are planning on renovating your home and want to consider some eco-friendly solutions, you will not only be helping the environment but you can potentially save yourself hundreds of dollars every year.
A good place to start is to look at your furnace. Consider this: if your home is 20 years old or older, your furnace likely performed at a 70% efficiency rating when it was at its peak condition. To understand efficiency, you need to ask: for every dollar of gas energy that goes into your furnace, how much turns into actual heat that comes into your duct work and how much goes up your chimney and out of your home (yet you still have to pay for)? If you have a 70% efficient furnace; that means 30 cents out of every dollar is going up your chimney!
If you were to upgrade to a new furnace under todays standards, you would be looking at a 98% efficiency rating. That means only 2 cents of energy is going out your chimney. That’s a significant difference!
A modern furnace runs an electric fan motor that expends 100 watts at full speed. That’s the equivalent of one light bulb. Again, the savings on your electrical bill over time can be significant.
Another option is to upgrade your air conditioner. In the last 3 years, the government has set new minimum performance standards for air conditioners. The new standards require that units expend a minimum of 1/3 the electrical energy than 3 years ago. So if your air conditioner is more than 3 years old, your model may not be performing to the new high-efficiency standards.
Although there are many other ways of saving energy, one last RenoGreen idea is to install a Programmable Thermostat. They are low cost to install, and are simple to operate with easy control panels and touch screen options. A programmable thermostat will automatically adjust home temperatures to suit your schedule according to your coming and going, or bed time.
We hope these tips will help you when you are considering renovating your home!
