A Modern Upgrade for Long-Term Living
Project Overview
These Calgary homeowners had visited one of Pinnacle’s Reno Tours as a result of receiving a neighbourhood Flyer. The current home was very dated, compartmentalized and lacked the more modern look and feel that this professional couple was attracted to. There was also a frustration with a very small ensuite and walk up vs walk-in closet space from the master bedroom. Tackling this renovation with the design ideas presented by Pinnacle would allow this couple to live for many more years in the neighbourhood they so loved; but now in a home they could absolutely adore vs tolerate!
Project Criteria
- Open up the compartmentalized main floor.
- Resolve the design challenge of the fireplace location.
- Create a dedicated mudroom.
- Salvage the current hardwood floors.
- Kitchen had to be mid-century modern aesthetic yet with 21st century function.
- Update the colour palette throughout the main and upper floors.
- Capture space in the upper floor to keep a main bath but enlarge the ensuite and closets.
How the Criteria Was Met
The entire main floor was gutted including strategically working around the current fireplace placement, allowing the kitchen to be relocated so a dedicated mudroom directly adjacent to this space was now perfectly positioned.
The kitchen now has an array of features including a gorgeous first impression with the range wall having ‘blue steel’ counter to ceiling tile, chimney style hood fan, floating shelves and both book-matched and waterfall cherry flat panel cabinetry in true mid-century modern style. In addition; the various amenities include a trash recycling center, magic corner pull out, slide out trays in the tall pantry unit, and dual-entry cabinetry on the island; not to mention floor to ceiling perimeter cabinetry.
The relocated kitchen gave room for a wonderful bright and roomy mudroom complete with custom locker and bench cabinetry, beautifully illuminated by the skylight and large window. Closing the mudroom off from the kitchen is a stylish Barn door complete with stainless hardware to again merge with the mid-century modern design throughout the main floor.
Making our way to the top floor is new custom railing, complete hardwood repair and refinish to match the main floor that now carries all the way up the staircase, and through the upper main floor. The key ‘freedom’ the homeowners allowed our design team, was to convert three bedrooms to two. This opportunity truly transformed the upper floor space, allowing a full 3-piece main bath, expansive ensuite as well as a wonderfully spacious walk through; walk-in closet.
The main bath renovation comes complete with custom full width and height U-Shaped drawers for a more sophisticated Modern aesthetic with matt black plumbing fixtures package that sets off the space like a sprinkling of jewellery; the bath is finished off with Hexagon tile lay on the floor by Ames and brick lay in the tub surround.
The ensuite and walk-in closet are a welcome sight in the morning with skylight and unique vanity wall frosted window bathing the space in natural light, and a relaxing sanctuary to return to each evening. This ensuite space was completely transformed from a cramped single sink bath to a delightful sanctuary complete with spacious dual sink and floating vanity to again mesh with the mid-century modern style, along with a graciously-sized shower with a 10 mil glass enclosure. Completing this ensemble is the walk through format walk-in closet now perfectly sized for this Homeowner.
The final results of this home renovation showcases a fresh, mid-century modern design, creating a home that this couple can enjoy for the rest of their lives!
